ALPHA EARTH

(YOUTH ENVIROMENTAL PROGRAM)

Alpha Earth engages young people as active citizens who improve the environment and their communities now and in the future.

We do so by training and supporting youth in program and activities that enable them to lead community action projects focused on creating sustainable solutions to local environment issues in
San Bernardino County

For example, an Alpha Earth class may decide that they want to clean up a local park strewn with litter. Cleaning up the park is an admirable task, but it does not ensure the park will be clean the next week. Alpha Earth encourages young people to look at the root cause of the issue and focus on creative solutions that address a public policy or community practice. Alpha Earth students have will work with city councils to enact better litter laws, groups will also conduct campaigns to instill community pride and discourage future littering, as well as working with officials to get more trash cans installed in the park. Our largest focus will be the removal of abandoned tires in the Desert Region and our response team for illegal dumping.

In the end, Alpha Earth will be a transformative experience for youth. Students, parents and the community.

What kind of projects will Alpha Earth YEP provide?

Examples of projects that a YEP will support:

·         Creating a recycling program in your community.

·         Cleaning up a creek or natural area site.

·         educating people in the San Bernardino County Communities  about alternative transportation

·         demonstrating to people in our community the benefits of composting and pesticide free yards

·         Investigating an issue, exploring possible solutions and communicating what you've found out to people in your community.

·         Providing a response team equipped with youth power to provide litter removal, and illegal dumping clean up.

·         And many other creative ideas!

Another project initiated will be the "Ecology in Focus" photography competition that will be held quarterly. Young photographers throughout San Bernardino County may show that creative photography is another medium that can be used to interest a broad audience in environmental issues. This competition will have a different theme each quarter and will offer scholarships to the winners. Its purpose is to raise heightened awareness of the ecology and environment through film.

Specific Request

Partnership with County of San Bernardino to recycle all County used inkjet, laser jet and toner cartridges.

Simply stated, recycling is good for the environment. It is the responsibility of every individual to do all they can today in order to insure the health of our planet tomorrow. We imagine that the County Administrative Component must go through thousand of cartridges a year. Alpha Earth feels that a recycling partnership will enable them to operate their YOUTH ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM and establish a more ECO-HAPPY county.

YEP FACT…..

*80% of all printer and fax cartridges (around 40 million) end up as landfill. These items are made with petroleum based plastics which are not biodegradable.

Alpha Earth makes recycling these empty cartridges, easy, educational and environmentally beneficial.

We will accept most cartridge models, and ensure their distribution to quality remanufactures (Staples Inc.) who refurbish and refill them for resale. This process conserves raw materials and the energy needed to produce a new product. It helps reduce solid waste, and gives the end user consumer an incentive to recycle, by creating a product of comparable quality at a lower price than the original manufacturers.

Some Cartridge Statistics

·         This year, only 20% of these petroleum based, plastic cartridges will be recycled. The remaining 80% will end up in landfill.

·         The average used toner cartridge weighs about 3lbs.. It is composed of 40% plastic, 40% metal and 20% other materials. The plastic is made of engineering-grade polymers which take over 1,000 years to decompose.97 % of these combined components can be recycled or reused.

·         3 quarts of oil are used to produce every toner cartridge. 2 ounces of oil are used to produce every inkjet cartridge.

·         The recovery and reuse of empty cartridges diverts millions of cubic feet of material from waste disposal, saving us millions of tax dollars needed to pay for additional landfill management.
